Lesson 1

In this lesson you will be keeping track of everything you eat and all the exercise you get for an entire week. This is not as easy as it sounds. Most of us overlook many of the little snacks we have during the day and we don't even think about the calories we are getting from beverages (yes, sodas are loaded with sugar and calories). So for this week it is important to have a good memory and be honest with yourself, otherwise your calorie balance numbers will not be accurate.

To complete this lesson, you will need to sign up for an account. Click here to access the first tool, my plate tracker, and create an account. This is the tool you will be using to keep track of all of your food and exercise. When creating your account, make sure you accurately fill in your age, height, weight, and gender to ensure proper calculations of your caloric balance.

Now that you are all signed up and ready to go, here are your tasks for the week.
1. Keep track of everything you eat and drink (except water) and enter it into the tracker program on a daily basis. Keep a food journal if you don't feel you can remember everything.
2. Enter into the my plate tracker program all forms of exercise you did throughout the day on a daily basis.
3. Once all food, drink, and exercise have been entered into the tracker, write on your Word document how many calories you have eaten each day and how many you have burned through exercise each day.
4. At the end of the week, summarize on your Word document your experience using this tool and tracking your diet for a week. Were you honest with yourself on how much you ate? Did your calorie numbers add up to what you expected? Will this process change the way you eat?
5. How many days did you go over your daily allowance of sodium? Look at your protein, fat, and carbs intake, did you get enough, did you get too much? Why do you think you got the amounts that you did? How many calories came from sugars? What do you need to cut out to reduce your sugar intake?

Remember, this is a week long activity that involves daily work. You will need to be diligent in order to get everything done.

Print out and turn in the Word document on Friday.
